James Alvin Porter of Independence, KY was born in Mason, Kentucky in Grant County on September 24, 1918 and passed away at the Gallatin Health Care Center in Warsaw, KY on November 7, 2009 at the age of 91. He was the son of the late Willie Foster and Bessie Morris Porter.
On July 31, 1941 he was united in marriage with the former Thelma Dell Wallace. In addition to his loving wife James is survived by one son: John Foster Porter of Homosassa Springs, FL; one daughter: Kellie Lynn Willoughby of Burlington, KY; one brother: Ray Porter of Williamstown, KY; one sister: Isabelle Smith of Lexington, KY; eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one great great grandson and many other relatives and friends. His son, James Henry Porter died before his father. Four brothers also preceded Mr. Porter in death: Porter Faulkner, Obie Porter, Otha Porter and Mitchell Porter.
Mr. Porter was a supervisor in the metal finishing department of Auto Sun Products Company in Cincinnati, Ohio for over 26 years. He retired in 1983. He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II. James was a member of the Independence Lions Club and served as President from 1998-1999. He was a member of the Moon Brothers Post #275 of the American Legion in Independence, KYand a member of the Wesleyan Christian Church in Covington, KY. He served as church treasurer for over 48 years, was a church board member and Sunday School teacher.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at the Elliston - Stanley Funeral Home, 132 S. Main St., Crittenden, KY 41030. Visitation will be 5:00 - 9:00 PM Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at the funeral home. Burial will take place in the Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Taylor Mill, Kentucky. Memorials are suggested to the Moon Brothers American Legion Post.
