Virgil Chandler, Sr. was born in Garrard, Kentucky in Clay County on January 21, 1941 and passed away at his residence in Williamstown, Kentucky in Grant County on December 30, 2008 at the age of 67. He was the son of the late William Jefferson and Opha Eversole Chandler.
On June 22, 1963, Virgil was united in marriage with the former Margaret Marie West who preceded Virgil in death September 30, 2004 after 41 years of marriage. From this union three children were born: Angelia Lane "Angie" Chandler of Bardstown, KY; Virgil Chandler, Jr. and wife, Deana of Williamstown, KY and William Nicholas Chandler and wife, Kristiof Williamstown, KY. In addition to his loving children, Virgil is survived by two brothers: Forest Lee Chandler of Dry Ridge, KY and Robert Gene Chandler of Oglethorpe, GA; one sister: Nellie Jean Sanford of Dry Ridge, Ky; 9 grandchildren: Kayla Chandler, Kody Chandler, Kory Chandler, Easton McClanahan, Olivia Chandler, Ashley Willoughby, Kaleb Willoughby, Braden Chandler and Kinmon Chandler. Two sisters previously died: May Blevins and Judy Pelatier.
Mr. Chandler was a member of the Williamstown Christian Church, the Grant County Historical Society, the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #301 in Williamstown, KY and a Past Master of the Grant Lodge #85 F. & A. M. in Williamstown, KY where he had been a member for over 43 years. He was the official "City Historian" for Williamstown, KY and a Kentucky Colonel. He was a veteran of the United States Army and the owner and operator of Chandler's Gun Shop in Williamstown, KY until his retirement on April 1, 2005.
Funeral services will be at 11:00AMSaturday, January 3, 2009 at the Elliston - Stanley Funeral Home, 500 N. Main St., Williamstown, KY 41097 with visitation at the funeral home from 4 - 9 PM on Friday, Jan. 2, 2009. Masonic services will be held 7:00 PM on Friday. Burial will take place in the Williamstown Cemetery with military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner's Children's Hospital, 1900 Richmond Rd., Lexington, KY 40502 or the American Diabetes Foundation, 8899 Brookside Ave., Suite 102, West Chester, OH 45069.
