Holton Smith, a Williamstown resident, passed away at the Veteran''s Hospital in Lexington, KY on Sunday, December 20, 2015 at the age of 94. Mr. Smith was born in Madison County to the late Wilbert and Beulah Smith. He is the husband of Gisela Neumann Smith.
Mr. Smith was retired as owner/operator of Holton Smith Excavating where he operated heavy equipment for more than 20 years. He ran heavy equipment for the City of Williamstown for over 20 years as well. He was a member of the Williamstown Baptist Church, member of Grant Lodge #85 F&AM, recently received the Grant Co. Veteran of the Year award, was a member of the Grant Co. Historical Society, received a Key to the City of Williamstown, and was a Kentucky Colonel. Mr. Smith was an Army Air Corps veteran of WWII and flew 52 combat missions over enemy territory. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor, and a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal. Mr. Smith also loved to build airplanes, fly as a hobby and piloted his last flight at the age of 89.
In addition to his wife Gisela, Mr. Smith is survived by two daughters, Karla Kirk (Bobby) of Lexington, Deborah Simpson of Williamstown, three brothers, Gordon Smith of Florence, KY, Rondall and Bobby Smith of Richmond, Ky, two sisters, Willie Mae Land of Richmond, Estill Lovings of Lexington, KY, two grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by two grandsons, a brother and a sister.
Visitation will be Tuesday, December 29, 2015 from 10-12:30 at the Elliston - Stanley Funeral Home in Williamstown, KY. Funeral services will be at 12:30. Burial with full military honors will follow at the KY Veterans Cemetery North, Williamstown. Memorials are suggested to Wreaths for KVCN Veterans, 205 Eibeck Lane, Williamstown, KY 41097.
