Martha Lissette Rieder Groves

Martha Lissette Rieder Groves, 93, of Florence, KY was born on May 30, 1922 in Cleveland, OH and passed away peacefully on November 19, 2015 at Providence Pavilion in Covington, KY.She is survived by her only granddaughter, Carmen (Rodney) Goderwis, and great granddaughters, Lindsey, Allison, and Haleigh Goderwis of Florence, KY, daughter-in-law, Lynn Brown Groves of Union, KY and sister, Dorothy (Robert) Magic of Hollywood, Florida.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Alma Martha Lang Rieder Stafford; father, Friedrich Johan Rieder; husband, Ellis Nelson Groves, Sr., and son, Ellis Nelson Groves, Jr.
Martha''s parents were both born in Switzerland and were married in Cleveland, OH in 1922 and lived at 9527 Nelson Avenue when Martha was born.Martha''s father died in 1938 at the age of 45.Her mother went on to marry George Stafford, and together they owned and operated the Broadlawn Lodge in New Florence, PA.There she met Ellis Nelson Groves, Sr., who was a truck driver for Rickenbacher Transportation of Pittsburg, PA.On October 4, 1941 they married in Winchester, Virginia.While living in Painsville, OH, their only son, Nelson, Jr. was born on October 5, 1942.Nelson, Sr. entered the navy on October 12, 1943 when his young son was only a year old.He served until August 6th, 1945.Nelson Sr. passed away March 3, 1979 at the age of 61.Martha began working for The Kroger Company on Main Street in Williamstown, KY in December of 1954 and continued working at various locations for 29 years, until she retired on May 31, 1983.Martha never remarried.
Martha enjoyed many hobbies such as playing the organ, gardening, fishing, cooking, canning, needlepoint, crochet, flower arranging and many crafts.She had lots of wonderful friends and loved traveling with them and attending church at Greenview Baptist. She was the most wonderful grandmother and great-grandmother any little girls could have.Always thing of others first, she was always willing to share, help, and give in any way she could, and her loving presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Visitation will be held at Elliston Stanley Funeral Home in Williamstown, KY from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Tuesday, November 24, 2015 with funeral services to follow at 1:00 PM.Burial will be in the Williamstown Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Drive, Lexington, KY 40504.
