DRY RIDGE - Robert "Bob" Bowling, 88, died Friday, May 7, 2010 at Walter's Personal Care Home, Stewartsville, KY. Mr. Bowling was born to the late Robert Lee Bowling and Laura Caldwell in Piner, KY. Mr. Bowling was preceded in death by his late wife Dorothy "Dot" Fortner whom he was married to for 55 years.


Mr. Bowling joined the Army on August 25, 1942 and served during WWII as a Military Policeman, a Marine Engineman, as well as a Landing Craft Boat Captain at which time he transported not only troops, but also V.I.P's such as General Patton, J.F.K., and General McArthur . Sargent Bowling all together had participated in the Bismarck Archipelago campaign, New Guinea, Sou Philippines, and the Luzon campaigns. Sgt. Bowling was released from active service on April 30, 1947 after receiving the American Theatre Ribbon; Asiatic Pacific Theater ribbon w/ 4 bronze stars; Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 bronze stars; WWII Victory Medal; Good Conduct Medal and the Bronze Arrowhead.


Upon arriving at home Mr. Bowling worked as a truck driver for Ready Mix Concrete for more than 35 years. He also was a farmer in Dry Ridge all his life where he and his wife raised their family. Mr. Bowling is survived by two sons, Gary (Barbara) Bowling of Dry Ridge, KY, Jim (Janet) Bowling of Dry Ridge, KY, one brother , "Hoss" Forest Bowling of Pensacola, FL., one sister, Ruby Bingham of Indio, CA, nine grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. Mr. Bowling was preceded in death by two sons, four brothers, one of whom was K.I.A. in WWII, and five sisters.


Visitation will be Tuesday, May 11, 2010 from 5-8 p.m. at the Elliston - Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown, KY. Funeral Services will be Wed , May 12 at 11:00 AM at the Dry Ridge Christian Church, Dry Ridge, KY. Burial will follow at the Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge, KY.
