John Marshall Glass

John Marshall Glass, 98, October 10, 1914 - September 18, 2013 of Clare Bridge Senior Living in Bradenton, Florida, and formerly ofSt. Petersburg, Florida for fifty years.

The third of four children, John Marshall Glass was born on October 10, 1914, in Wilmore, Kentucky in Jessamine County, to parents Bessie Beard Glass and Charles Jake Glass.

In 1920, the Glass family moved to Williamstown, Kentucky, in Grant County. Charlie Glass and his brother, Ed, bought and operated the Williamstown Electric Plant and the local Roller Mill. the Glass family moved a few times, but all within Grant County.

John attended school in Dry Ridge, Corinth and Williamstown, graduating from Williamstown High School in 1932. He then joined the U. S. Navy for 4 years. He was on the Battleship Maryland in Hawaii two years before the attack on Pearl Harbor.

In April of 1940 he married "Bib", Mary Elizabeth Eckler, daughter of Doctor and Mrs. C. M. Eckler, of Williamstown. The newly married couple moved to San Francisco, Caliifornia, for one year while John worked at the Bethlehem Steel Shipyard.

As World War II intensified, John enlisted in the United States Maritime Services Officers School in New London, Connecticut. Then he was sent to Baltimore, Maryland, to train other big ship operators between Baltimore and Norfolk, Virginia, on the Chesapeake Bay. In 1944 he was transferred to the U.S.Maritime Base in St. Petersburg, Florida, to train other seamen to run small supply ships on Tampa Bay.

In 1945, John left the Maritime Service and he and Bib moved from St. Petersburg back to Grant County to assist his father and two brothers in running the Williamstown Roller Mills, "The Home of White Lily Flour".

In 1955, John studied finance courses, becoming a licensed stock broker and then worked at E. F. Hutton in Cincinnati. Also, in subsequent years he worked in the Parimutuel Departments of several racetracks in Kentucky and Florida.

In 1960, John and Bib and daughters, Dana and Susan, moved to St. Petersburg, Florida, where they lived each winter in the Maximo Moorings subdivision. They returned to Williamstown for many summers. Then in 1967, they sold their Kentucky home on North Main Street and became fulltime Florida residents where he and Bib lived for 46 years. John was preceded in death by his older brothers Henry and Howard Glass, and his younger sister Stella Finley of Georgetown.

John was also preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Mary Elizabeth, on September 3rd, 2006.

He is survived by daughters Dana Foerster (Larry) of Bradenton, FL and Susan Bowlin (Don) of Cypress, TX. He has one granddaughter, Ellizabeth Brucks of Ocoee, FL and two great grandchildren.

No Florida services are planned. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 28, 2013 at the Elliston - Stanley Funeral Home, 500 N. Main St., Williamstown, KY 41097 with visitation at the funeral home from 10:00 - 11:00 AM on Saturday. Burial will follow in the Williamstown Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Williamstown Christian Church, P. O. Box 7, Williamstown, KY 41097.
