Dr. Darl Shipp, 90, of Dry Ridge, KY, passed away Friday April 23, 2021 at his residence. Born June 12, 1930 in Moore’s Hill, IN, he was the son of the late John Willard and Mae Stephens Shipp.
In 1939, his family moved from Covington where his father was a conductor on a street car. His passion for farming brought the family to the Oak Ridge community of Grant Co. where farm life was instilled in Darl; he became an active life long farmer.
Darl attended Mason School, graduating in 1948. He was also a graduate of Georgetown College and the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He served his intern at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Covington. He moved to Dry Ridge in 1960 where he oversaw the medical care of patients in Grant, Owen and Pendleton Counties for over 50 years, dedicating himself to the practice of medicine and the art of healing to enhance the quality of life for Grant Co.
On September 14, 1957, Darl was united in marriage to the former Linda Gail Blackburn; she survives. From that union they were blessed with three sons.
In spite of his busy medical life, he found time to serve the county he loved. He helped found Eagle Creek Country Club; he was a charter member of the Dry Ridge Kiwanis, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Shriners, achieving a 32 nd rank and a member of the spiritual life of the Dry Ridge Christian Church. He served his country in the Army Reserves for 9 years. He raised Belgium horses, Simmental cattle and Tennessee Walking Horses on his farm.
Among his many activities and honors are: All American Farmer and Secretary with the National Farmers of America, Board of Directors of American Walking Horse Association, Kentucky Medical Association, State Honorary Commissioner of Agriculture, Team Physician for Grant Co. Schools, Kentucky Colonel, Commissioner's Staff, Kentucky State Police and NRA Legion of Honor. In 2017, he was awarded the Grant Countian of the Year Award. In every way, his life and dedication to his community has proven to be a great blessing.
His legacy of love and dedication will be carried on by his wife of almost 64 years, Linda Blackburn Shipp; his two sons: Todd (Debby) Shipp of Dry Ridge, KY, Jeff (Margie) Shipp of Edgewood, KY, along with eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son: Michael Shipp, who died on December 14, 2011 and a brother: Kline Delano Shipp, who died on January 13, 2019.
Visitation will be Sunday April 25, 2021 from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Eckler-McDaniel Funeral Home in Dry Ridge. Funeral services will be conducted Monday Aril 26 th at 11:00 a.m. with Bro. Tim Polley officiating. Burial will follow in Hill Crest Cemetery.
