Doris Marshall Piles passed away peacefully on Monday, April 18, 2022 at her home in Davidson, North Carolina. She was 93 years old. Doris was born on December 23, 1928 in Corinth, Kentucky. She lived in Grant County the majority of her life and was an active community member until she moved to Davidson in 2014. She lived out the remainder of her years at The Pines Retirement Community where she spent her time coloring and watching westerns, continuing her lifelong devotion to John Wayne & the entire genre.
As a member of Williamstown Christian Church, Doris gave back to the congregation through her child-rearing gifts, serving as a longtime volunteer for the preschool. She was known to encourage realistic drawing techniques among the class, teaching countless children the art of coloring inside the lines and using the proper colors for water, grass, and the sky.
Her aesthetic sensibility bled into her home life as well. She had a knack for creating a warm and welcoming home, and her flair for the refined manifested in the form of tasteful decor and graceful hosting. If you ever had a meal at Doris’s house, you would find the table elegantly set with a tablecloth, a floral arrangement, and delicious food plated on her favorite dishes.
She took up additional hobbies during adulthood, learning both golf and quilting in her 50s. Always one to give her best to every endeavor, she took both activities a step further – serving as a host for the annual Ladies Crystal Tournament at Eagle Creek Country Club and winning a blue ribbon at the Kentucky State Championship in quilting.
Doris was independent & unapologetic, warm-hearted & endearing – walking that unique, captivating line that can only be cultivated by the grit and grace found in small towns. She would masterfully pair a broach to her outfit just as quickly as she’d behead a snake found in her garden; she exuded both strength and class, and all who knew and loved her are better for it.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Piles. She is survived by her son: Ricky Vincent (Jennette), Crittenden; daughters: Cindy Walter (Buck), Dry Ridge; Mindy Piles (Angela Sansalone), Cincinnati; and Becky Montgomery (Emmett), Davidson, NC; her grandchildren: Sonya Vincent, Florence; Ryan Vincent, Crittenden; Whitney Walter Barr (Cale), Georgetown; Michael Walter, Dry Ridge; Ellen Montgomery, Charlotte, NC; Emma Montgomery, New York, NY; Theodore Fate Piles Sansalone, Cincinnati; great-grandchildren: Savannah and Elizabeth Vincent, Crittenden; Harper and Harrison Barr, Georgetown.
