Elma "Doris" Smiley

Elma “Doris” Smiley, age 89, of Ft. Wright, KY, passed away Thursday February 3, 2022 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center - Florence.  Born March 10, 1932 in Greencastle, IN, she was the daughter of the late Homer and Lucille Abbott Cook.

On December 16, 1951, she was united in marriage to Norman “Frank” Smiley, a union that lasted 59 years; he preceded her in death on November 20, 2020.  She retired from Levi Strauss & Co. in Florence. She was actively involved in the life and ministry of her church, Grace Baptist Church in Florence. Entertaining family and friends and spending time in the kitchen cooking up her favorite recipes brought much joy and contentment to Doris, but her greatest fulfillment in life was spending time with her grandchildren.

She leaves to carry on her legacy of love, four daughters: Ann (Jeff) Ruby of Florence, KY, Sue Branscum (Patrick) of Butler, KY, Lorna (Bob) Dirr of Independence, KY, Alice (Jeff) Flick of Hebron, KY; two sons: Jim (Donna) Smiley of Hebron, Ky and John (Teresa) Smiley of Independence, KY; three sisters: Edna Mae Smiley of Greencastle, IN, Edith Tarter of Fort Wright, KY and Mary Ellen Smith of Fillmore, IN. Also surviving are fourteen grandchildren: Chad, Christie, Ryan, Samantha, Amanda, Johnny, Erin, Cameron, Scott, Melissa, Kaytlin, Justin, Bobbie and James; 20 great-grandchildren: Coby, Ella, Isaiah, Lillie, Riece, Skylee,Caleb, Hadley, Jasmine, Elijah, Norman, Ethan, Reagan, Tanner, Madilyn, Orin, Wyatt, Charlotte, Jay and Everett.  She was preceded in death by three brothers: Ernie Cook, Edwin Cook and Eugene Cook.

Visitation will be Friday February 11, 2022 from 11:00 – 1:00 at Stanley Funeral Homes – Williamstown location. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 with Rev. Wilbert Ellis officiating.  She will be laid to rest next to her husband at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery – North in Williamstown. The granddaughters will be serving as pallbearers.
