Gilbert Paul Souder

February 25, 1945 — February 24, 2024

Gilbert Paul Souder, a proud U.S. Navy Veteran, of Florence, KY, formerly of Williamstown, entered into the ranks of his heavenly home on Saturday February 24, 2024, one day before his 79th birthday at Hospice of St. Elizabeth in Edgewood. The son of the late Clarence Paul and Ada Lee Taylor Souder, he was born in Williamstown on February 25, 1945. Gilbert enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served in the Vietnam War; he valued his time and service to the country he proudly served. He served on the Aircraft Carrier - USS Intrepid, also known as “The Fighting I” during the Vietnam War. Upon being discharged from the Navy, on November 28, 1968 at Williamstown Baptist Church he was united in marriage to the former Elizabeth “Libby” Ruth Dunn; after 48 years of a beautiful and committed relationship, she preceded him in death on March 15, 2016. As a deeply committed husband, father, and “Papaw”, Gilbert deeply cared and sacrificed for his family. Upon retirement from the U.S. Postal Service, he had spent 33 years as a mail carrier. He will be remembered as a history buff; he loved out-fishing his son-n-law, had a special love for U.K. Sports and being a “people person” brought him much enjoyment in life. He leaves to carry on his legacy of love and commitment to his two children: Steve (Chrystal) Souder of Verona, Angie (Mike) Deitmaring of Union; one brother: John (Lucie) Souder of Dry Ridge and a sister: Christine Scroggins of Williamstown, along with six grandchildren: Brittany Farrell, Megan Taylor, Michael Deitmaring, Jr., Amanda Deitmaring, Cassidy Souder and Cameron Souder and seven great-grandchildren: Kailee, Isaiah, Noah, Max, Myles, Carson and Matthew. He was preceded in death by one brother: Clarence Souder, Jr. and three sisters: Ada Skirvin, Callie Barnett and Juanita Souder. Visitation will be Friday March 1, 2024 from 4:00 till 8:00 p.m. at Stanley Funeral Homes – Williamstown. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday morning at 9:00 at Stanley Funeral Homes. He will be laid to rest beside his wife, Libby, in Williamstown Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Gilbert's memory to: Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, 3033 Wilson Blvd. Suite 300, Arlington, VA 22201.
