Gregory "Greg" Yancey, a Covington resident, passed away late Thursday evening, October 20th, 2022 at St. Elizabeth Hospital of Edgewood, Kentucky at the age of 66. He was born at St. Elizabeth Hospital of Covington on Monday, December 19th, 1955 to Dorothy Yancey and the late Richard Yancey. Along with his father, he is preceded in death by one of his brothers, Todd Yancey.
Greg was a graduate of Walton-Verona High School, and following graduation he attended Cumberland College to study seminary. After his time at Cumberland, he returned home to begin the genesis of his preaching career at the New Bethel Baptist Church for a duration of over 4 years. Over time, Greg became a devoted member and leader within Alcoholics Anonymous, working through his own sobriety and helping his fellow members along their own journey. At the time of his passing, Greg had reached 5 years of sobriety- his family, friends, and fellow members were incredibly proud of him for this achievement. Throughout the past year, Greg has worked at a Sober Living Facility in Blue Ash, Ohio- aiding residents in their journey to recovery. His devotion to this cause and the well being of the facility's residents helped countless individuals to develop healthy coping skills and habits for when they returned home to their daily lives.
Along with his mother, Greg is survived by his two brothers: Nelson Yancey of Independence, KY and Dan Evans of Georgia; along with his son, Brian McIlvain, and daughter-in-law, Tiffany May of Covington. Greg leaves a legacy of his 6 grandchildren: Faith May, Damian May, Brian McIlvain Jr., Hudson McIlvain, Jordan Bagley, and Bryson. Going camping, to the park, fishing- any time spent with his grandkids was among his greatest joys in life. He always had a passion for horses and caring for these beautiful animals, and over the years he became an avid golfer. Greg was described as having a great adoration of food. He loved going out to eat with his family and friends, his favorite being Chinese food, but to him nothing ever beat a good home cooked meal.
Services for Greg will be conducted at a later date at the convenience of the family.
