Jerry Roger Hassman

July 31, 1942 — July 2, 2024

Jerry Roger Hassman, 81, of Dry Ridge, KY, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2024, at his home. He will be missed by all that knew him for his quick and unfiltered wit, sage advice (which was often unsolicited), merciless teasing, love of UK basketball, playing Rook, Waffle House mornings with his friends, and spending time with his family at the farm. Before his health struggles, food brought him great joy- shopping for it, preparing meals for his family to enjoy together, and frequenting local restaurants in search of a great steak, bowl of gumbo or fried fish sandwich. Although his health declined in recent years, simple pleasures such as crossword puzzles, enjoying a cup of coffee overlooking the farm, watching an old western from his recliner, or critiquing Calipari’s coaching over the telephone with all who would listen, still brought him great happiness.

He retired from CSX Railroad after a lengthy and colorful career as a Special Agent. During his tenure, he was named a Kentucky Colonel by The Governor. He took great pride in his farm and spent years raising tobacco. As a devoted Christian he served as deacon at Dry Ridge Christian Church for many years. An Army Veteran, he also proudly served his country in Vietnam.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Donna Hedger Hassman (his “Donna Sue”); sons Carter Hassman and Jon Hassman (Brandy); daughters Christy Stall and Carissa Hughett. Loving grandchildren who adored their papaw included Will Hassman (Emily), Drew Hassman, Luke Hassman, Lexie Stall (Colt), Holly Hughett, Hayden Hughett, Sam Hassman and Rex Hassman. He was also blessed with one great-grandchild, Jackson Sawaya. He is survived by two brothers: Tommy Joe West and Ronnie West, as well as many friends, some lifelong.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clyde Hassman, his mother, Ruby West and a beloved aunt, Polly Satchwill (“Nanny”).
