Larry Houston Spears

Larry H. Spears, 85, of Dry Ridge, peacefully passed away at his home in Perdido Beach, Alabama, on Thursday morning, October 13, 2022. Mr. Spears was born June 24, 1937 in Taylorsville, KY. His parents were Charles Wilson Spears, Sr., and Kathleen Woodson Spears. He was preceded in death by his wife Jane Spears. He had two children, Natalie Jane Spears of Crittenden, Kentucky and Brent Wilson Spears (Jennifer) of Perdido Beach, Alabama. He had five grandchildren Robert Tyler Spears, Caren Jane Spears, Kinzlee Wilson Spears, Abigail Davis and Nicholas Spears. He had two great grandchildren Avery and Rhys Spears. Charlene Rogers of Williamstown has been a family friend and a companion in Mr. Spears later life. Mr. Spears was preceded in death by his siblings Charles Spears JR, Jack Spears, Norma Carrithers, Betty Scaggs and Sherrill Carr.

Spears graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy and was a pharmacist for many years in Grant County. The success of Mr. Spears businesses and his devotion to pharmacy science inspired him to make a gracious donation to create an Endowed Chair in Pharmacogenetic at the University of Kentucky. He was the founder of The Larry H. Spears Foundation, a non-profit organization that only exists for the operation of the Free Lunch Kitchen located at 11 South Main Street in Dry Ridge. Prior to his death, Mr. Spears provided for the Free Kitchen to maintain uninterrupted service to the Grant County Community. He was a member of Dry Ridge Christian Church. He also built and operated many businesses in Grant County. His devotion to Grant County led to his receiving the Chamber of Commerce 2002 Business Person of the Year award. In 2010 he also received Grant Countian of the Year award. A Celebration of Life has been planned for November 18, 2022 from 5-9pm at the Josephina in Dry Ridge.
