Mrs. Lucy "Jan" Haas Simon, a Walton resident, passed away at her residence on Friday, December 11, 2020 at the age of 93. She was the widow of Robert F. Simon.
Lucy Jeanette Haas, (affectionately known as Jan), was born on September 2 nd 1927, the youngest of 8 children. She married Robert F. Simon, a Staff Sergeant stationed at Fort Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma. They left Oklahoma after their wedding departing to Lincoln Park, Michigan her husband’s home town, and began her career as a housewife and homemaker.
Jan was very artistic, which aided greatly in her contribution to a florist business they established in addition to her husband’s position with Ford Motor Company. She was also an accomplished seamstress, designing and making custom wedding dresses, coats, and alterations, but her favorite was making doll clothes. In 1960, she was awarded 1 st Place in a major charity competition dressing 2 dolls. She received a new state of the art Singer Sewing Machine, which she used throughout her sewing years and which still resides among her family to this day. All the dolls were judged and exhibited at the Ford Rotunda Auditorium Christmas Exhibition. Perhaps her favorite was making the seasonal adornments for the Infant of Prague statue. Some of which are still being used today. In addition to her other talents, she was a fabulous cook and baker, known for her ability to prepare delicious hors d’oeuvres and entrées for group gatherings and, of course, family engagements.
In the mid 1980’s she moved to Naples, FL and was the proprietor of a live bait and tackle shop that she expanded into a wholesale, live shrimp business, supplying bait shops all along the coast of Southeast Florida. She loved to fish, and set a Florida record for the largest tarpon caught on light tackle. She eventually retired, sold the business, and built a magnificent cul-de-sac home on Collier Bay in Marco Island, Florida. She sold the home in Florida in 1996 and moved to Walton, KY near her daughter, Janet, and was very active for years in All Saints Church activities until illness prevented her participation in her latter years. She remained in her Walton home until her passing breath on December 11 th , 2020.
In addition to her contributions to the Church and the community, she brought forth three children, which she truly loved and nourished throughout her lifetime. Her life exemplified selfless giving, best described in Galatians 5:22
“…the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.”
Forevermore, Lucy’s love will be reflected by those who knew her best.
Jan is survived by two sons, Robert W. Simon of Walton, KY, Larry (Pam) Simon of Myrtle Beach, SC, one daughter, Janet (Tom) Collard of Walton, KY, ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
