Mattie Cox

Mattie Holbrook Cox was born on December 4, 1932 in Bays (Breathitt Co.), KY and passed away Sunday, May 15, 2022 in Dry Ridge, KY at the age of 89.  She was the daughter of the late Herbert T and Belle Elizabeth Hatton Holbrook.

Mattie was a Wolfe County High School graduate who received a business and education degree from Eastern KY University  and her Master's Degree and Rank 1 teaching degree from the University of Kentucky.  While gaining her education, Mattie was awarded the "Who's Who Award" among American College Students.  She began her teaching career at the young age of 19 at Wolfe County Schools then on to Shelby County and eventually Grant County High School where she taught business classes, shorthand, and typing and developed the Business Co-op Program.  Mrs. Cox then went on to become the Instructional Supervisor at the Grant County Board of Education.  She was a member of the Democratic Women's Club, Grant County Campaign Co-Chair for Gov. Wilkinson, a Kentucky Colonel, and was a member of the Williamstown Christian Church.  She enjoyed playing the piano, dulcimer, was an accomplished artist and enjoyed crafting and learning to do anything new.

On December 25, 1953 Mattie married the love of her life, William "Joe" Cox, who preceded her in death in 1984.

She is survived by two daughters; Canis L. (Michael) Wirth of Erlanger, KY, Susan C. (Donnie) Ballard of Dry Ridge, KY, a brother, Ted Holbrook of Pine Ridge, KY, 2 Sisters; Ruby Collins of Richmond, KY, Sue Perior of Somerset, KY, 4 Grandchildren; Jordan Mize of Latonia, KY, Adam Wirth of Erlanger, KY, Clint Ballard of Grants Lick, KY, Lee Ballard of Somerset, KY, and 3 Great Grandchildren; Gage Ballard, Beau Wirth, and Aven Wirth.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Billie Jo Mize and a brother Don Holbrook.

Visitation will be from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Friday, May 20, 2022 at the Elliston Stanley Funeral Home in Williamstown, KY.  Memorial Service will at 2:00 PM with Rev. Mike McGinnis presiding.
