Phyllis Ann Hollars Kunz of Williamstown, Kentucky passed away Thursday afternoon, September 21st, 2023 at the Boonespring Skilled Nursing Facility in Union, Kentucky at the age of 83, one week short of her 84th birthday. She was born on Thursday, September 28th, 1939 in Tateville, Kentucky to the late Russell and Gladys Hollars. In addition to her parents, Phyllis is preceded in death by her husband Stuart.
Phyllis spent her younger years in Clarksville, Indiana. Later she attended New Albany High School located in New Albany, Indiana where she graduated with the class of 1957. Following her time in high school she attended classes at Indiana University. For several years, Phyllis worked as an Executive Secretary at companies around the surrounding Louisville area including: LCA, Maxwell House-General Foods, as well as General Electric. It was while working at GE that Phyllis would first meet the love of her life and future husband, Stuart, who at the time was a sales/product specialist at the company. She was affectionately given the nickname “Muddy” by her coworkers at GE because of her adoration of the music of ‘Muddy Waters’, while none of her coworkers had even heard of the musician. An obvious enthusiast of rock & roll music, Phyllis has always been a huge fan of Elvis as well, she even had the delight of watching him perform live in concert one year when he came to Louisville.
A voracious reader, Phyllis owned walls of bookshelves packed with books- all of which she had personally read. Books on history, religion, and fiction were among her favorites; her favorite fiction author being ‘John Steinbeck.’ Phyllis enjoyed writing herself and it had always been a dream of hers to become a writer. She channeled her love of writing into a passionate hobby, one that followed her throughout the entirety of her life. Hers were works of mostly fiction and short stories, but later in life she incorporated some of her stories into self-reflecting memoirs. Phyllis was always a very faith-oriented person throughout all of life, even faithfully attending online Bible Study in her later years. She possessed such a pretty smile, always dressed her best, and took much pride in the way she looked and presented herself to the world. Such an incredibly sweet woman that would never get mad or overcome with anger.
On Monday, August 3rd, 1963, Phyllis Hollars became Phyllis Kunz as she was united in marriage to her fiancé, Stuart; the two of them were happily married for over 50 years until Stuart’s passing in 2017. Together Phyllis and Stuart had one child, their loving daughter, Lesley. Phyllis is survived by her only other sibling, her brother Lowell (Jean) Hollars of Scottsdale, Arizona; as well as her daughter Lesley (Jason) Rahschulte of Williamstown, KY. She leaves a lasting legacy of her one and only treasured Grandchild, Kyle Rahschulte. Though she comes from a small family herself, and would go on to form her own small family, there was never any shortage of love and care provided for those individuals within her life. “Her primary focus in life had always been to be a good mother and wife.”
