Stanley “Sonny Boy” Clay Shelton , 79, a native of the Sherman Community of Grant County, KY, currently living in Florence, KY, entered his eternal home on Monday night March 4, 2024 at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Cincinnati, OH. Born on January 10, 1945 in Grant County, he was the son of the late Stanley Clay and Edrie Belle McBee Shelton.
On December 4, 1991, “Sonny Boy”, as he was affectionately known, was united in marriage to the former Patricia Ann Chipman; she survives. Having a great desire to serve his country, at the age of 17 “Sonny Boy” volunteered for the United States Marines, having had his parents sign for him because of his age; he proudly and honorably served in the divisive conflict of the Vietnam War. He earned the rank of Lance Corporal and because of his sacrifice and injury in enemy action, he was awarded the solemn distinction of the Purple Heart. Upon his return to the United States, he began a career in truck driving. After many years in this profession, he retired as an Over-the-Road truck driver for Nobar Transit. Over the years he and his wife and family enjoyed traveling across the country in their 5th Wheel RV camper exploring the countryside. He was an avid UK Basketball fan and loved going on motorcycle rides with his friends. They made Florence Alliance Church their church home where he and his family served faithfully.
He leaves to carry on his legacy, his lovely wife of 33 years, Patricia Ann Shelton, along with one son: David Clay Shelton of Walton; one step-son: Steve (Jamie) Cox of Florence, three sisters: Emma Dean Justice of Warsaw, Barbara Ann Stewart of Dry Ridge, Mary Michael (Boots) Kells of Dry Ridge; seven grandchildren: Taylor Shelton, Tristan Lewis, Bryce Morris, Zonell Westfield, Harley Turner, Madelyn Cox and Steven Cox, along with five great-grandchildren: Ny, Bella, Lala, Zeke and Cooper. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Timmy Shelton and a step-son, Dale Cox.
